Hey everyone, it’s your friend miziicz and today we are going over the biggest problems with the xbox. Before we get into the issues of today, we need to go over some history. It all starts back 2001 when the original xbox released. Back in the 6th console generation the xbox, ps2 and game cube were all really competing against each other for the same audience. Then Nintendo decided to focus on casual gamers with the Wii. Leaving the xbox 360 and the ps3 to compete for the more hardcore audience. With superior online capability, Halo 3, and a party chat system the xbox 360 was the clear winner of the 7th generation of consoles, beating out the PS3.
Xbox’s down fall started before the Xbox one was even announced. In my opinion the downfall of xbox started with the connect. This is when xbox started to lose its identity and tried cutting into the casual market that the Wii had an iron grip on. The platform was trying to be everything to everyone which inevitably leaves the console falling short of meeting expectations for both hardcore and casual audiences. It was around this time Microsoft got complacent the playstation network was down for an entire month and Microsoft just started to feel like there was no competition.

It was around this time Microsoft got complacent the playstation network was down for an entire month and Microsoft just started to feel like there was no competition.
Then May 21st 2013 happened. The day xbox died. This was the day that Don Mattrick, the president of interactive entertainment at Microsoft, got on stage and announced the xbox one. There was no game play, there was a large price tag, there was a connect that no one wanted but everyone was forced to buy and of course there was no halo, except for the halo tv show we still haven’t gotten. The downward momentum from this event carried its way to the launch. The months following the release of the xbox one was some of the darkest times for the xbox brand I’d ever seen and I had been there since the beginning.
Microsoft had realized that xbox was in a downward spiral and started taking drastic actions to save the xbox one. Microsoft fired Don Mattrick and appointed Phil Spencer as the head of xbox. Xbox has refocused on the games that gamers care about. Xbox is still recovering from the dark times after the initial launch of the xbox one to this day only selling half of the number of consoles than sony. Xbox has been improving and making gains ever since its poor launch in 2013. However the console still has some issues. I really hope to see all these issues addressed for the xbox series x is released. These are the top 5 biggest issues with the xbox one.
Number 5 – Better user interface or UI for short
The tile layout currently on the xbox one is synonymous with Microsoft user interface design however, this design is better suited for the PC. This tile layout was originally featured on windows 8 when it released in 2012. Even with a mouse that allowed you to click on the exact tile you wanted without having to manually scroll over every tile on the way to the tile you need to access. PC users still hated this design. Microsoft got the message and in one of the quickest turn around times ever made windows 10 which removed almost all the tiles from the UI. However this design was still implemented onto the Xbox one. Even seven years after this xbox one UI was released, we’ve only had upgrades to the UI. Every time I need to find something it seems like I must got through a lot more menus and screens then seems necessary. The xbox series x needs a complete UI overhall.
Number 4 – Lack of hard drive space
Games just keep getting bigger and bigger but my xbox hard drive is staying the same size. Every time modern warfare has an update its like 50 gigabites even when they didn’t add anything. It seems like I can only have 5 games downloaded at a time. They do make external hard drives for the xbox one however its not nearly as good as the on-board hard drive. Load times are much longer on the external hard drives than the internal drive. Also there are a limited number of USB ports on the xbox one so have to sacrifice one of those ports is a big ask. This is really annoying because there are a lot of games I would like to play every once and a while but can’t play since I’d have to re download them before I play them. This has lead me to own a large library of games that I don’t play anymore. I hope the xbox one series x allows for cloud storage of games that we don’t play often.
Number 3 – outdated controller
When the xbox 360 released in 2005 it set the standard for what a gaming controller should be. Even today a lot of people still view the xbox 360 controller as a standard for controllers. When the Xbox one released in 2013 the controller got an ergonomics upgrade and felt like a genuine upgrade to the predecessor. However, that is a joke compared to the PlayStation 4 controller upgrade. The Dual shock 4 controller showcases vast improvements and many new features. The new dual shock has a light bar, a clickable touchpad, and a speaker. Not every game needs to use all these features however when used properly it’s a great feeling and adds immense value to games. Lastly the ps4 controller comes standard with an internal rechargeable battery while the Xbox just gives you two double A batteries which feels kinda outdated for a modern gaming controller.
Number 2 – Lack of 3rd party applications
I understand that no consoles support 3rd party applications so Microsoft isn’t falling short of the competition but when things were going so poorly at the start and things need to change quickly it should have been a major wake up call. Microsoft should have made developing 3rd party applications for the xbox much easier. Just imagine having discord on the xbox. Xbox live has 90 million active monthly players so Microsoft could have easily gotten companies like discord, obs, flux, razer and MSI to make software for the xbox one. But instead we are still reliant on Microsoft to develop and support all the software for the xbox.
Number 1 – lack of exclusive games
This one is a big no brainer. People own gaming consoles to play games. There are three main reasons why someone would want to buy a new console. One of them is to be able to play with their friends, but you can’t control what platform someone’s friends play on. The other reasons are do play a specific game or have a specific feature. Almost every exclusive on the xbox one has been a big disappointment. Halo 5 was off target with its expectations, halo MCC didn’t even work the first few years it was out and gears of war 5 had too many microtransactions. Also, a lot of first party Microsoft games aren’t even exclusives. I can now play halo MCC on my pc and I could always play sea of thieves on my PC. Xbox is really gonna need to step up its exclusives if they are gonna make it back on top.
I really think Microsoft will be back on top with the xbox series x. I have faith that Phil Spencer will lead the xbox team to develop the best nextgen console. Phil has been at Microsoft since before he graduated college and is an all around genuine gamer. Since taking over as head of xbox he has pushed many initiatives including cross platform play, backwards compatibility, the xbox game pass, the xbox adaptive controller, increased support of pc gaming and almost doubled the number of first party studios.
Thank you for making it to the end of the video it really helps out the channel. What would help even more is if you subscribed.
